Blood Pressure

Also known as: BP, Arterial Pressure

Well-Established Cardiovascular Health

The force of blood pushing against artery walls, measured as systolic (heart pumping) over diastolic (heart resting) pressure.

FULL EXPLANATION

Blood pressure represents the force exerted by circulating blood on the walls of blood vessels. It's expressed as two numbers: systolic pressure (when the heart beats) over diastolic pressure (when the heart rests between beats).

Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg). A reading of 120/80 mmHg is considered normal. High blood pressure (hypertension) is a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and kidney disease.

WHY IT MATTERS

Hypertension is often called the \"silent killer\" because it typically has no symptoms but significantly increases risk of cardiovascular events. Regular monitoring and control are essential for longevity.

HOW TO IMPROVE

Reduce blood pressure through regular exercise, DASH diet (high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains), sodium restriction, weight management, limiting alcohol, and stress reduction.

NORMAL RANGES

Normal: <120/80 mmHg. Elevated: 120-129/<80 mmHg. High (Stage 1): 130-139/80-89 mmHg. High (Stage 2): >=140/>=90 mmHg.
