Ketosis

Also known as: Ketogenic State, Fat Adaptation

Emerging Research Metabolic Health

A metabolic state where the body primarily burns fat for fuel, producing ketone bodies as an alternative energy source to glucose.

FULL EXPLANATION

Ketosis is a metabolic state in which the body shifts from using glucose as its primary fuel source to burning fat and producing ketone bodies (beta-hydroxybutyrate, acetoacetate, and acetone) for energy.

This state occurs during fasting, carbohydrate restriction, or prolonged exercise. Ketones can fuel most tissues, including the brain, and may offer neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory benefits.

WHY IT MATTERS

Ketosis has therapeutic applications for epilepsy, may benefit cognitive function, and is used for weight management. However, it may not be appropriate for everyone and requires careful implementation.

HOW TO IMPROVE

Achieve ketosis through very low-carbohydrate diets (typically under 50g/day), extended fasting, or combining moderate carb restriction with fasting periods.

NORMAL RANGES

Blood ketone levels: under 0.5 mmol/L is normal/non-ketotic. Light ketosis: 0.5-1.0 mmol/L. Nutritional ketosis: 1.0-3.0 mmol/L. Ketoacidosis (dangerous): above 10 mmol/L.
